Introduction

Markie is an AI-assisted expense tracking app that allows users to capture receipts using photos, camera scans, or voice memos. This privacy policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information.

Information We Collect

User-Provided Content

When you use Markie, you may provide:

  • Receipt images: Photos or camera scans of receipts that you upload for processing
  • Voice recordings: Audio content containing receipt information that you choose to submit
  • Parsed receipt data: Merchant names, dates, categories, items, totals, and other transaction details extracted from your receipts
  • User edits: Manual corrections or modifications you make to parsed receipt information

Account Information

Markie uses Firebase Authentication with Google Sign-In and Firestore for cloud sync. We collect:

  • Your email address
  • Your Google account display name (if provided)
  • Authentication credentials managed by Firebase

Permissions

The app requests the following permissions only when needed:

  • Camera: To capture receipt photos for receipt capture or voice editing
  • Microphone: To record voice memos containing receipt information
  • Photo Library: To access and select photos of receipts (optional, for convenience)
  • Location: Optional, may be requested to enhance receipt capture features in future updates

How We Use Your Information

Your data is used exclusively to provide and improve Markie's core functionality:

  • Receipt parsing: Images or audio you provide are sent to our backend service for processing. This service uses AI to extract structured receipt data (merchant, date, category, items, totals, and commands).
  • Data storage: Parsed receipt information is stored in association with your signed-in user account for review, editing, and future reference.
  • Voice-based editing: Voice commands allow you to review, edit, and correct parsed receipts manually or using voice-based edit commands.
  • AI insights: Your receipt data may be used to generate summaries and insights about your spending patterns.

Data Storage and Processing

Backend Processing: Receipt parsing and voice editing are performed by a backend service. User-provided content (images or audio) is sent to this backend service only to process and extract structured receipt data. This data is used only to generate receipt information and is associated with the signed-in user.

Cloud Synchronization: Parsed receipt data is stored using Firebase Firestore and synchronized across your devices when you are signed in.

Data Retention: Your receipt data remains in our system until you choose to delete it or delete your account.

In-Progress Receipts

If parsing is in progress, receipts may temporarily appear with an "in progress" indicator. During this time, the receipt is being processed by our backend service. Once processing is complete, the parsed data becomes available for your review and editing.

Data Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties, except:

  • Service providers: We use Firebase (Google Cloud) for authentication and cloud storage, and third-party services for AI-powered receipt parsing.
  • Legal requirements: We may disclose information if required by law or to protect our rights and safety.

Security

We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your data:

  • Secure authentication via Firebase Authentication
  • Encrypted data transmission (HTTPS/TLS)
  • Secure cloud storage with Firebase Firestore

However, no method of transmission over the Internet is 100% secure. While we strive to protect your information, we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Your Rights and Choices

You have the following rights regarding your data:

  • Access: You can view all your receipt data within the app
  • Edit: You can manually edit any parsed receipt information or use voice commands to make corrections
  • Delete: You can delete individual receipts or your entire account at any time
  • Opt-out: You can choose not to provide optional permissions (camera, microphone, photo library)

TestFlight Beta Testing

This is currently a TestFlight beta build. During the beta period, we may collect additional feedback and crash reports to improve the app. Beta builds are subject to this privacy policy and Apple's TestFlight terms.

No Paid Features or Subscriptions

This beta build does not include paid features or subscriptions.

Children's Privacy

Markie is not intended for use by individuals under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we discover that we have collected such information, we will delete it promptly.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Your continued use of Markie after such changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
